Volunteer Junction: October 2018 Ideas and Updates in the Apache Junction Food Bank
Good News – Staff, Board Members Rehab, and Rehab, and Rehab…and REHAB
With the consent of Pinal County Facility officials, AJ Board Member and Rehab Chairman Gary Kloefkorn wasted no time beginning to patch, remove, replace and paint areas of the AJ Food Bank. The 4,000 square foot facility gets a lot of use by hundreds of people every week. Money earmarked for necessary fixes and maintenance went very far due to the complete dedication of free laborers like several board members, some staff, a couple volunteers and a couple local businesses.
Clear hired professionals tasks 6 days a week. It needed some work. We used the board and staff as much as possible – we wanted volunteers to see the care we have for our work environment and increase our sense of pride. The primarily colors in our logo have been used. We are still doing shelves and touch ups. We hope to be all spruced up for the Thursday, Oct.18 AJ Chamber of Commerce mixer at the Food Bank.
With funds earmarked for this project, we have been able to replace the kitchen sink, counters and cupboard. Gary donated all of the supplies. The lovely bathroom set up is thanks to Board Member Sharon Allison-Brown. Sharon and our Treasurer Georga Humphreys put in over 20 hours each painting with Gary, Austin, Ryan, Carl and Jo. Gary’s hours are innumerable. It began as a conversation about replacing signage outside and painting the doorways into a full-fledged project in a matter of weeks. New signage for the outside the building has been ordered too!
Team Leads, PLEASE join us for our AJ Chamber of Commerce Mixer, Thursday, Oct. 18th at 5:30 pm. This about 60-90 min event is being hosted by our nonprofit and we need your help, enthusiasm and expertise. We will be showing groups of local business leaders our facility and hopefully, creating some partnerships. Food and one alcoholic beverage will be served.

AZ State Fair – We do still have about 60 tickets left for the AZ State Fair for our volunteers. Oct. 24 is the day the fair set aside for nonprofits to celebrate their volunteers and give you, family and friends tickets. A sign-up sheet is on the large dry erase board and you are welcome to ask for all the tickets you think you can use. We have enough for every summer volunteer to have two. If you need 4, 6, 8 (take the bridge club or the neighbors), please just ask.
MAKING AN OPPORTUNITY OUT OF A CATASTROPE- Most of You Know We Had A Major Truck Repair Needed This Week – Dan Rice got to experience a tough morning when the drive shaft of our 16-foot, refrigerated truck fell out of the vehicle on Tuesday morning. He handled it well and removed the pieces of our truck from the road. It is at AJ Tire and Service – a local shop that has been very responsive to our needs. I sent out a media alert and called in a couple favors to help get the word out that we needed donations to fix our truck out. Local radio became local chat rooms then TV stations got involved, Face Book and newspapers posting. We are very fortunate – Please see the attached press release for details about how the community responded.
COPS COMING TO AJFB. As a reminder, the AJ Police Department will be with us next week – OCT 11th at Noon – They are presenting a workplace safety class to our organization in October. Staff needs to be there (Jim, Jo, Dan, Hyo), team leaders, board members and any volunteers interested are encouraged to join us.
Meetings have been scheduled now for the next six months. Every second Thursday for 45 minutes in the large conference room in the Pinal County Facilities Bldg next to where our truck parks. All interested volunteers and team leads are needed to help address issues that occur, Link2Feed paperless possibilities, pre-shift meeting so we can start in person talks about how to do receipts, how to handle the power going out, what to give potential new volunteers, and as we enter the holiday season, how you want to make Thanksgiving program better than last year. Talking through procedures, signage – anything that needs to be aired, fixed or discussed with transparency is important. You need to be involved as stakeholders in what we do.

It is our plan to send this Volunteer Junction communication to our volunteers, board members and staff regularly to share news and give updates about the goings on at the AJFB. Please always feel free to make suggestions and offer ideas. We want to foster a positive volunteer experience through open communication
